There are two types of arthritis: rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune condition where the body sees itself as the enemy. The immune system’s antibodies attack the joints and soft tissues, causing inflammation, pain, and gradual deterioration of the joint. RA can be a debilitating condition, especially when it occurs in young children.
Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease, also called wear-and-tear arthritis. This form of arthritis affects many of us as we age. It occurs as the joints wear out over time. It usually starts in the joints of the hands and feet but eventually can affect even the larger joints of the body. Both rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis can cause pain and stiffness.
