Home Remedies For Tinnitus

In Latin, tinnire means “to ring”. Tinnitus is the medical term for “ringing in the ears,”. It is the perception of ringing, hissing, or other sound in the ears when no external sound is present. It affects 1 in 5 of the World’s population, and touches over 33% of the elderly community. It may be intermittent or constant in character, mild or severe in intensity, vary from a low roar or throbbing to a high-pitch sound so deafening the individual may hear nothing else. It may be subjective -audible only to the patient or may be objective which is audible to others. It may or may not be associated with a hearing impairment. Tinnitus isn’t a disease. It’s a symptom that can be caused by a number of medical conditions. Refer to the list of home remedies tinnitus at the bottom of this page.

What are the causes of Tinnitus ?

  • Most tinnitus comes from damage to the microscopic endings of the hearing nerve in the inner ear.

  • Hearing loss. Doctors and scientists have discovered that people with different kinds of hearing loss also have tinnitus. Too much exposure to loud noise can cause tinnitus.

  • Long-term use of certain medications. Aspirin used in large doses, quinine, antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs can affect inner ear cells. Trauma-related damage to your inner ear.

  • Temporomandibular joint problems. These are “jaw joint” disorders, and they may result in clicking or grating noises when you move the jaw.

  • Stiffening of the bones in the middle ear.

  • A hole in or a rupture of the eardrum.

  • Ear infection. If an infection reduces your ability to hear outside noises, you’re more likely to hear the noises related to tinnitus.

  • Ear wax. Buildup of excess wax in your ear can reduce your ability to hear or inflammation of the eardrum membrane, the middle ear, or the inner ear.
  • Allergies, tumors, and problems in the heart and blood vessels, jaws, and neck can cause tinnitus. High blood cholesterol clogs arteries that supply oxygen to the nerves of the inner ear. If you are older, advancing age is generally accompanied by a certain amount of hearing nerve impairment and tinnitus.

  • Diet can affect tinnitus. Specific foods may trigger tinnitus. Foods include red wine, grain-based spirits, cheese, and chocolate quinine/tonic water, high fat, high sodium can all make tinnitus worse in some people.

  • Stress is not a direct cause of tinnitus, but it will generally make an already existing case worse. Ringing in the ears also sometimes accompanies vertigo (dizziness).

  • Maskers are small electronic devices that use sound to make tinnitus less noticeable. Maskers do not make tinnitus go away, but they make the ringing or roaring seem softer.

  • Alternative treatments:

Some people have taken minerals such as magnesium or zinc, herbal preparations such as Ginkgo biloba, homeopathic remedies, or B vitamins for their tinnitus and found them to be helpful. Others have experienced tinnitus relief with acupuncture, sacral therapy, magnets, hyperbaric oxygen, or hypnosis.

Has anyone tried essential oils for their tinnitus? I have read to apply topically 1 drop of each, basil, helichysum, geranium and lavender on temples, forehead, back of neck and around the ear, and on the fleshy part of the ear and then pull ear lobe in a circular motion 10 times to enhance the absorption three times a day.

Both of my parents have this condition and I’m looking for something that has actually helped. Please let me know if you have used oils with success or anything else that has helped you. Thanks!

So I’ve had the big T for quite a few years now and thought I was losing my mind when it first started…I was convinced it was some kind of hissing from all the electronics in the house. Finally realized it was tinnitus. I have it constantly in my right ear and For me…being dehydrated makes it considerably worse…staying well hydrated and eating a variety of fruit seems to minimize the noise. At night I do use a white noise which definitely helps

Try doing yoga. It helped me a lot! Bhrahmri is the best cure for tinnitus. Place ur three fingers on the eyes of both hands, use both thumbs to close ur ears. Now start humming 7 or 9 or 11 times, Saying Aum or amen. This is going to help u so much that u will know the result in few days itself. Thank you for reading.

I’ve experienced it with myself for many years as being a medium pitched tone, very constant, especially prevalent when going to bed and everything is relatively quiet.
I try to ignore it, or overlay it with thought, sometimes it seems like it might get louder or out of control and feel a scary concept of not being able to control this very distracting and disturbing thing.
I am convinced it has a direct connection to high blood pressure/ overweight/ diabetes. Think of a teapot on a high burner whistling, that’s your ears with tinnitus. The ear canal is acting like a pressure valve and we are actually hearing the excess pressure being released out of our noggin. Don’t waste your money on expensive gimmicks people, simply diet and exercise out of the diabetic condition.

  • Sarah Jane

although most sufferers try to ignore the noise I have found that actually listening to it can sometimes work. You need to be as relaxed as possible and breath deeply and slowly as you kind of go into the sound. You know how you sometimes listen avidly to a favourite piece of music? Well, its just like that. As you concentrate the sound can actually fade a bit. Worth a try if you can get into the right frame of mind.

I am 17 and have had it for a few years. I know mine is from loud noises. It has gotten worse lately, as the guy who I hunt with doesn’t bring ear protection when hunting. It is not all the time. Sometimes I go a day or 2 without noticing it, but when it hits, it’s everywhere from minor to cripplingly loud. Sometimes, my only break from it is blasting music. I know it’s only making it worse, but I have no other way of getting a break from it.

I had sounds in my ears which went away when I was vacationing in Switzerland in 1977. I do not understand why this happened. The sounds in my ears have never returned. Did it have something to do with pressure in the ears since I was at a high altitude? I have a lot of trouble with my ears after swimming in ocean water and when traveling on airplanes, but the sounds in my ears have not returned since 1977. I do not understand why the sounds went away, but I am very thankful. At least I can say that for some people it is not a condition that does not go away.

I am 50 years old.I affect tinnites 18 month.Ent Dr told this problem won’t cure.I am worry about this.Anybody this problem cureway know inform.

Try finger drumming. I have high pitched tinnitus – noticing occasional very loud sound in ear for a brief moment then subsides- and have found this as a temporary relief.

Place the palms of your hands over your ears with fingers resting gently on the back of your head. Your middle fingers should point toward one another just above the base of your skull. Place your index fingers on top of you middle fingers and snap them (the index fingers) onto the skull making a loud, drumming noise. Repeat 40-50 times.

Repeat several times a day for as long as necessary to reduce tinnitus.

    • Great tip Thom!

    • Davi

      Hi Thom.
I’m from Brazil, I suffer from tinnitus since childhood, (I am 37 years old).
I don’t quite understand what you suggested.
I must put pressure in my ears with the Palm of my hand?
      Thanks for the reply.

    • Ken

I just tried this with a little reduction to the screaming noise in my ears and it may help. I am 56 and have always had this but it seems worse after antibiotics. I had ear infections as a child which may have a relationship.

I’ve suffered from Tinnitus pretty much my entire life (I’m 50 now). It gets a lot worse when I’m sick.
Unfortunately, there is no scientific or medical cause for actual tinnitus since it cannot be measured.
Only the patient can say that they “hear” ringing, buzzing, etc.
I hear a lot of people who do not suffer from this affliction say to “just ignore it”.
Doctors can only speculate and guess at possible cures, all of which rely entirely on vitamins, minerals, lifestyle changes, etc. which are all spotty at best.
Until the medical community can actually diagnose Tinnitus we are all pretty much stuck with it.

    • Alison

Or they tell you to just turn a fan on when you’re trying to sleep as if you haven’t thought of that. When my tinnitus is really bad, I can hear the ringing over the fan.

  • Stuart j annand

as near as I can tell, tinnitus is related to coffee and alcohol, I will let you know when I quit both of them at the same time.

I am suffering from 24/7 tinnitus in my right ear accompanied by a mild to moderate hearing loss. The frequency is 8 kHz approximately. It peaks in the morning and sometimes I wake-up at the middle of the night. I am very tired of my condition and my life is changing. Please help.

  • Kayla

I don’t think I have tinnitus, but I went to a concert yesterday and after my ear has been ringing nonstop. It is literally driving me insane now. I am trying to ignore it but I’m so worried that it won’t ever go away. I was going to try ear drops of some sorts, but I’m not sure. Should I wait it out? Or get it checked?

  • Sweeney

The ringing in the “ear” goes on even when you block the ear.
I think it is in the brain.
100 mg of niacin three times a day is recommended by a doctor.
Getting rid of bacteria would help you completly. Sweeney

  • JJ

Gingko biloba helps increase blood flow to the neck, head and brain. Additionally, it reduces inflammation in blood vessels, promoting better circulation; also, zinc, 90-150 mg daily helps; or take 300 mg. a day of Coenzyme Q10- crucial in the circulation to the ears.

  • JOHN

I have hissing in left ear and went to doctor,he cleaned ears but nothing was different. He found a dropoff in left ear at high range meaning that I lose whispers.HOWEVER suddenly I had no problem then it started again but only when I lay in bed at night in left ear.Recently It got louder and I notice it loud after I urinate.I WONDER if something in me is helping until it flushes out of me.I don’t understand why there is a fluxuation in hissing even if there is no sound in the room at all and don’t believe it has anything to do with blood pressure. It would be nice if someone found a cure ,good luck.

  • Joel

Consider yourselves lucky!!!!! i have had it since i can remember, i had tubes put in my ears a few times as a young child so Im pretty sure its from that or the infections leading up too the tubes. At any rate tinnitus sucks! i have never heard total silence, even while camping in the most perfect still night, the ring is only louder. the trick is just not to focus on it and dont let that sound get to you, just let it fade into the background and it makes it bearable. i have dreamed of the day they would find a cure for it…

    • HH

I have the same story :0,(. Tubes in my ears when I was a young child and ear infections that followed. Luckily I stopped getting the ear infections but the ringing has never gone away. It’s started in different tones now and is louder, does that happen to you? I just read helichrysm is supposed to help…

  • Alexander

My tinnitus started after a cold and ear infection…and now after 3 months it has not dissapeared and i can still feel something in my right ear, where the tinnitus occured….sometimes i have some kind of attacks, when my tinnitus is very loud and i lose my hearing a little bit for about 10 sec….also when i put my finger in the right ear , it seems more powerfull, and it seems pretty close to my finger. And at night when i`m in horisontal position, my eyes start to drift and can`t focus on anything. i suppose its a sinus/ midear problem since the audiogram went perfect, no hearing loss. if anyone knows all the medications for mid ear problems, please reply this. i`m in great need.

    Concerned person,
There is no cure for tinnitus because it is a symptom. It sounds like you have wax buildup in your ear and if you go to an ENT and that’s the cause of the ringing he can clean it out and stop the ringing. My rt ear started to ring for the first time 6 weeks ago and I got no sleep , anxiety , all of it. I went to an ENT and I have nothing wrong but the ringing. It’s unknown why so far. You will start to get used to it and not even know it’s there after a while but at first it is very scary. Get it checked out. In the mean time listen to music , turn on a fan so that sounds distracts you and try not to be around complete quiet because that’s when it will seem very loud. I have a continuous ring and I try to let it go and continue in with my life. Honestly , if it’s nothing serious which it usually isn’t, than just ignore it and pay no mind. Put ear buds in and when falling asleep listen to pink noise. You can find it on youtube and it will run for like an hour and a half. You won’t hear the ringing threw it. Good luck and I will pray for you. Laura xoxoxo

  • Concerned Person

Good day, How do I get rid of tinnitus? its started when I had a blocked ear and I tried cleaning it and afterwards I got this ring in my ear its driving me crazy I have lack of sleep but its only in my left ear
Sometimes I don’t hear it but when I get to a quiet place I can hear it, is there any possible advice to deal with this please!

    • Lee

it is impossible to get off rid of tinnitus…i got the same thing like you, tinnitus and ringing on the left ear. my advise to you ..don’t take any aspirin and reduce the stress. excersise 30 min ( walk/jogging) everyday it’s help to make blod circuation. Diazepam medication its help a lot for people got tinnitus. for theraphy ringing in the ear at home…turn on the Fan behind your back and listen the propeler noise/sound of the fan ( its sound weird , but i did it) . don’t stay in quit room or it will get worse.

you need MELATONIN for sleep every night, otherwise you will get worse if not enough sleep.

sometimes hearing aid it help too for people got tinnitus, but i recommend to seek a doctor. hopefully this comment its help you.

I suffered a brain injury from a car accident my tinnitus seems to have gotten louder since then. I avoid drinking coffee or tea as this seems to make it louder.
I’m looking for a silver bullet.
