  Home Remedies for
Poison Ivy and Poison Oak

These three plants are responsible for more cases of dermatitis than any other substances. When contact is made with any part of the plant a rash develops on the skin, this rash is cause by a reaction to a chemical compound in the resin called urushiol (one of the most potent toxins on earth) found all over the plant, some cases have been reported from people that came in contact with pets that had been in the bushes. When the plant is burned, the smoke is also irritant and can cause a reaction in the respiratory tract.

The symptoms are red pimples extremely itchy, swelling, blisters, burning, inflammation, fever and/or inflamation in the face or genitals area. The appearance of the symptoms can be between anywhere from a few hours to seven or ten days after contact with the plant. It can then spread rapidly during the next three days, especially with scratching.

The areas most likely to be affected by poison ivy are the hands, arms, face or legs. Scratching the rash can spread the inflammation to other parts of the body. Redness, swelling and itching usually begin to heal after the second day that the rash appears.

Normally a person can be completely healed within seven to fourteen days of coming into contact with poison ivy.

Home remedies for Poison Ivy we recommend:

Home remedies for Poison Ivy #2: Take Calcium and Beta-carotene, they help to boost the immune response and to speed healing of poison ivy.

Home remedies for Poison Ivy #3: Take Zinc, helps to repair skin tissue damaged by poison ivy.

Home remedies for Poison Ivy #4: Use Calamine lotion, is good to speed healing of poison ivy.

Another way to reduce itching is mixing 1 tsp. of water with 3 tsp. of one of these dry ingredients; cornstarch, baking soda, oatmeal or Epson salts. Make a paste and apply over the affected skin.

Home remedies for Poison Ivy #5: For cooling relief, apply over the itching area aloe vera juice, tofu or watermelon rind, they soothe and dry poison ivy immediately.

Home remedies for Poison Ivy #6: Calendula lotion es very good in reducing itching, limiting the spread of the rash and helping the body to heal faster.

Scratching your rash DOES NOT spread it. It may seem to spread since different areas of the skin can absorb the oils at varying rates. This causes the rash to come in over a matter of days rather than coming in all at once. It DOES NOT mean you are spreading the rash. The only thing that can cause a rash is the Urishiol oil.

poison ivy
Our neighbor has a ton of it in his yard, so our cat brings it home all the time. We've found ketscup works REALLY well on it.

I think it's the vinegar that makes it work.

First time my husband had to be put on steriods and the whole nine yards. Now at the first sign of a tingle, we slather it on.

jewelweed
take jewelweed (which usually grows around poison ivy), grab a stalk, mash it along with leaves and flowers and apply to blisters or if you know you've gotten into it, apply the juice of the jewelweed mash to the area and it counteracts the poison ivy sap. When applied to blisters, it lessens the itch and clears up the poison ivy really fast! I'm hear to tell you, it really works! I'm allergic to poison ivy and nothing i've taken besides steroids works but came across the jewelweed (which grows abundantly on my farm...alas, so does poison ivy) and it works. Steep broken up stalks, flowers and leaves in witch hazel for 2 weeks, strain and use the elixir...i'm telling you, it's the best natural stuff out there!

UMM....your wrong...
Just so you know. Medically speaking. The poison Ivy rash doesnt spread..it simply shows up in places where it took the oil from the plant longer to absorb into the skin and react with the skin..so your remedys arent helping the rash not spread because the rash doesnt spread anyway. just so you know. dont get me wrong i am not against home remedys i know people cant afford health care because insurance is rediculus. but ya. the rash doesnt spread. thats a common myth.

To Gwen P
Based upon personal experience, the rash DOES spread. After the initial eruption of blisters on my leg, I brushed my arm across the blisters that were weeping, and to my dismay, the blisters started appearing on my forearm. I inadvertently scratched the blisters on my arm and then took my necklace and earrings off without washing my hands; now I have poison ivy on the back of my neck and behind my ears! And, somehow managed to get it under my left breast so I can't wear a bra. ACK!

ivy spreads
I came into direct contact with poison ivy...an hour later, scrubbed with rubbing alcohol, and washed very thouroughly with warn soapy water and really scrubbed. Two days later, a rash broke out on the arm where I came into contact. Two days after my first rash broke out, my girlfreind and I were watching a movie together and one day later, she broke out lightly exactly where her arm was on mine! I believe it can and does spread directly. If the oil is so dificult to wash off, perhaps the body doesn't completely metabolize it very quickly as well.

Testimonials

"Dear Charles,

Thank you for taking the time to put all of the wonderful home remedies recipes and information into a book!

It is a great resource for me as a great grandmother that cares for a 4 year old granddaughter and a 3 year old great granddaughter during the daytime while their parents work.

Dear Charles:
I just got your Home remedies e-book and I must say it's so easy to navigate, the amount of information is overwhelming and it's written in plain English without any Latin names or technical jargon.

I can't wait until I make my own body lotion and moisturizing cream.

P.S. I love the tips, secrets and shocking statistics and information you give throughout the book.

Hi Charles;

I don't usually write recommendation letters, but I felt that I should congratulate you for your work on the Home Remedies e-book. I have very sensitive skin and when I shave my legs I get a very annoying itch and irritation that last for days.

I tried many creams but they burn my skin and make my irritation worst, After I got your e-book I decided to make your recipe for body cream. The results were unbelievable it goes on smoothly, with no burning sensation, and no irritation, it brings back a silky moist feel that I've never experienced before with any other cream and it last all day without having to re-apply several times.

The amount I have made cost me a few cents and it will last me for about six or seven months.

Thank you for solving my problem with a great product

On your site wild yam root is recommended for morning sickness. I have had a terrible time with morning sickness and had become quite miserable, isolated and depressed that I could not move without feeling like I was going to vomit. I tried the wild yam tincture and I feel so much better! Thank you very much!

Thank you again for the recommendations on morning sickness!
