Home Remedies For Liver
The liver is the largest organ in the body. It has a number
of jobs, including forming and excreting bile, controlling
cholesterol metabolism, metabolizing drugs and other substances,
and forming urea, albumin, enzymes, and other proteins.
The most common disorders affecting the liver include hepatitis
and cirrhosis.
Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver, which is marked
by tenderness and swelling, mild fever, fatigue, joint or
muscle aches, vomiting, nausea, loss of appetite, and possibly
diarrhea. Many cases go undiagnosed, since these symptoms
are indicative of so many other conditions, including the
stomach flu.
According to the American Liver Foundation, viral hepatitis
is the most common of the serious contagious viral diseases
that attack the liver. Although hepatitis can be caused
by a virus, it also may be caused by drugs, alcohol, and
chemicals. Of the viral-caused forms, there are at least
five types of hepatitis presently known: Hepatitis A, B,
C, D, and E. Rarer causes include other viruses (such as
yellow fever, leptospirosis, cytomegalovirus, and infectious
mononucleosis). Hepatitis can cause permanent damage to
the liver.
Cirrhosis is a chronic liver disease. In the United States,
most cases of cirrhosis are due to chronic alcoholism; however,
it can also be caused by severe reactions to prescription
drugs, biliary obstruction, prolonged exposure to environmental
toxins, and abnormal storage of metals by the body.
Cirrhosis is marked by destruction of normal liver tissue.
This destruction leads to scar formation, which interferes
with normal liver function. Unfortunately, in many cases,
obvious symptoms do not occur until the disease is quite
advanced.
In addition to those herbs listed below, other beneficial
herbs for liver disorders include blue vervain, devil's
claw, elecampane, horseradish, hyssop, oxeye daisy, peppermint,
and yarrow.
